Telecommunication

Information is a basic component in medicine. For medical diagnosis data are collected from different sources or procedures, e.g. physical examination, endoscopy and radiology. Telemedicine renders a new availability of these data at several places simultanously, independent from the inquirers presence. Improvements include for example the acceleration of diagnostic processes and matching of findings, an increase of effectivity by coordination of procedures, an improved collaboration between the hospital and involved general practicioners and a simplification of data-transfer between the hospital and health care services. The telecommunication module has been realized in the context of SICONET (Stereoscopic Image Communication NETwork) in collaboration with the research unit of the Deutsche Telekom in Darmstadt. In the SICONET module bidirectional coding and transmission of stereoscopic video signals and related audio and data channels are accomplished. To achieve a bidirectional link a second coder/decoder pair is needed. This method of linking the codecs was chosen for the easy availibility, the great flexibility and for the possibility of making point to multipoint connections. Impressing life sequences from actual surgical interventions can be shown, with video signals coming from a variety of different cameras (microscopic camera, endoscopic camera, standard room camera, etc.). With this system images can be watched using a time sequential 100 Hz display system with shuttered glasses or a double projection system with polarizing filters and glasses for a larger audience. Visual depth information is a prerequisite for the manipulation and control of complex objects using a communication link. In addition to these more efficient coding and transmission schemes SICONET is concerned with the integration of 3D-techniques into commonly used data processing equipment.
