Dear colleague,

modern laparoscopic surgery for benign diseases gains more and more weight. It seems to combine less trauma to the patient and equal results compared with open surgery.

In the treatment of malignant conditions, non-invasive staging plays an important role in the therapeutic approach of gastrointestinal malignancies. Laparoscopy in combination with laparoscopic ultrasonography has been introduced as a new procedure. The advantage of laparoscopic staging is generally expressed in terms of prevention of unnecessary laparotomies.

However, many questions have not been answered yet, f.e. whether the laparoscopical procedure induces different lymphatic flow of the abdominal cavity or stimulates the adhesion of tumor cells to port sites. Also the technical equipment used and the aggressiveness of laparoscopic staging are still under debate. Furthermore it remains unclear, to what extent laparoscopic ultrasound or peritoneal fluid samples should have impact on neoadjuvant treatment protocols.

This workshop intends to analyse basic research aspects as well as the routine of clinical application. Experts will be available for teaching and discussion.

There will be a few invited lectures to make plenty of time available for presentations and discussions.

You are cordially invited to participate
