"Differentiation in the Cardiovascular System"
June 27-28, 1997
Franz-Volhard-Klinik, Berlin-Buch

Introduction

In 1997 the topic of the Franz Volhard Symposium in Berlin-Buch will be the differentiation of vascular cells during the development of blood vessels and the dedifferentiation of these same cells in chronic vascular disease. We will discuss the mechanisms whereby vascular smooth muscle cells are recruited and migrate from the mesenchyme to the developing vessel, as well as the organ specific differentiation of endothelial cells. We will critically evaluate existing cell lineages and differentiation systems and discuss the relevance of differentiation "marker" proteins and cell-specific promoters.

The use of transgenic animal models for analysis of these processes will also be a topic. We will then address the dedifferentiation of endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells during disease and the relationship between growth and differentiation in the vessel wall.

We hope to have an interesting symposium with stimulating and lively discussions. The symposium will begin on Friday morning, June 27 and we will finish with farewell dinner on Saturday evening, June 28. Our traditional boat tour on the river Spree will take place on Friday night after the keynote lecture. As in the last years, attendance will be limited to about 100 participants.

We are looking forward to welcoming you at the Franz-Volhard-Klinik in Berlin-Buch in June.
