What is Eumedis ?
EUMEDIS - Euro-Mediterranean Information Society Initiative by the European Commission

Objectives:

The acceleration of the overall economic development rate through the modernisation of the most strategic sectors and the most active layers of Mediterranean societies.
Re-enforcement of the tools and the methodologies that support mutual comprehension and understanding of the numerous cultures and beliefs that compose the Euro-Mediterranean richness and diversity.
The overall improvement of the quality of life as a direct consequence of the large-scale deployment of regional information society initiatives in various sector of the Euro-Mediterranean social life.

Approach:

Eumedis will fund under the first strand the creation of a network of Mediterranean Information Society Focal Points which will develop a harmonised governmental strategy for the development of the Euro-Mediterranean Information Society.
Also under the first strand, Eumedis will fund the (Internet based) interconnection between European research networks and the Mediterranean research networks. This connectivity will not only boost the development of Internet in each Mediterranean country, but will also create a large "high bandwidth ring" around the Mediterranean regions.
Under the second strand, Eumedis will fund regional pilot information society projects in five sectors of application:
- Information and communication technologies applied to Education,
- Electronic Commerce and Economic Cooperation,
- Health Care Networks,
- Multimedia Access to Cultural Heritage and Tourism,
- Information and communication technologies applied in industry and innovation

In the sector "Health Care Networks" of the EUMEDIS initiative, currently five projects are co-funded by the European Commission:

EMPHIS - Euro-Mediterranean Public Health Information System
BurNet - Euro-Mediterranean Burn Centres Network
EMISPHER - Euro-Mediterranean Internet-Satellite Platform for Health, medical Education and Research
PARADIGMA - PARticipative Approach to DIsease Global MAnagement
EUMED-Cancer GEMED Network
