The objective of the PANORAMA project was to provide new technology to overcome limitations of current video communication systems by introducing 3-D tele-presence. For that reason the consortium had decided to propose a single project where the 14 most experienced European institutions on 3-D imaging was involved, which increased the world-wide competitiveness of European industry in this field. To validate the performance of the developed technology, 3D tele-presence has been integrated into first demonstrator systems for video communication with 3D tele-presence. Accompanying these developments, field trials on existing stereoscopic technology were performed, where the SRU OP 2000 lead the medical field trial - stereoscopy in medicine.
The adaptation and integration of
different video cameras, microscopes, laparoscopes, monitors, computers, network
products, transmission systems etc. have been realised and tested to guarantee
the interoperativity of the different systems. Therefore routinely working stereoscopic
systems in the Clinic for Surgical Oncology of the Robert-Rössle-Klinik
(RRK) have been established. The systems allow local 3-D-image acquisition,
local stereoscopic display possibilities, in-house 3-D-video transmission and
a link to external partners (Fig. 2).
Using the prototype satellite link and ATM-link the transmission of high quality
(broad cast) pictures for interactive telesurgery, teleradiology and telepathology
via several bidirectional, interactive live 3-D conferences during national,
European and international events have been tested (Fig. 3; stereoscopic monitor
in the middle).
After the final audit the European Commission classified this project as highly
successful.
