Leader: Prof. Dr. Karl Josef Osterziel

The group is focussed on "disease oriented research" in the field of heart muscle diseases. We are mainly interested in the pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms of cardiomyopathies. Furthermore, "patient oriented research" with affected patients is done in several clinical studies. Especially inherited forms of hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy are examined in different projects. A further area of interest are genetic aspects of congenital heart diseases and congestive heart failure.

Because the Department for Cardiology is located at Charit Campus Buch as well as at Charit Campus Virchow Clinic, the group has also two locations. The main research facility, i.e. the CardioGenetic Lab, is located in Berlin-Buch close to the Max-Delbrck Center for Molecular Medicine. The outpatients clinic for cardiomyopathy and heart failure is located in Berlin-Wedding at Campus Virchow Clinic close to the wards and the functional diagnostics.
